This set of volumes provides comprehensive information covering The Christian Empire to the Close of the Middle Ages. Each volume provides a subject index, bibliography abbreviations, and a general bibliography.

Classical Myths and Legends in the Middle Ages and Renaissance: A Dictionary of Allegorical Meanings.
PN669.B78 1998 Porter.

This dictionary includes illustrations, appendices, a subject index and an annotated bibliography of primary sources, and a general bibliography of secondary sources.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church.

Dictionary of the Middle Ages.
Ref D114.D5 1982 Porter (13 volumes).

From the American Council of Learned Societies, this set of dictionaries provide brief entries, some which are accompanied with illustrations and/or cross-references. Bibliographic information is provided with each entry. A complete subject index is included as a separate volume.

Dictionary of Christian Biography.
Ref BR95.S65 1967 Porter (4 volumes).

Provides brief entries containing abbreviated bibliographic information.

Dictionary of Medieval Knighthood and Chivalry.
Ref CR4505.B76 1986 Porter.

Provides concepts and terminology related to the subject of Medieval knighthood. Includes respective appendices, a full bibliography of sources and a general index.

The Ecole Initiative: Early Church Online Encyclopedia.

This online service is provided by the University of Evansville. It provides articles, images, documents and chronology of early church history.

Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature

The Grove Dictionary of Art Online.

This online dictionary can be searched for images, iconography, artists and terminology related to medieval history.

Illustrated Encyclopedia of Medieval Civilization.
Ref CB353.G7 1980 Porter.

Provides brief entries covering Aachen to Zwentibold, with illustrations imbedded throughout. Included is a list of abbreviations, select bibliographies, a section containing maps, a chronological table, and an index.

The New Cambridge Medieval History.
D117.N48 1995 St. Jerome's (7 volumes - some are missing).

This set of encyclopedias provides historical information pertaining to Medieval times. A list of maps, tables, plates, contributors, and abbreviations are provided in addition to a complete bibliography of sources consulted.

The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium.
Ref DF521.093 1991 Porter (3 volumes).

Each volume includes brief entries with bibliographic information and some illustrations. Also included are a list of maps, general abbreviations, bibliographic abbreviations, abbreviations of manuscript citations, biblical book abbreviations, and a directory of contributors.

The Oxford Dictionary of Popes.

Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Provides information covering aspects of medieval times and philosophy. Included is a guide on how to use the encyclopedia(s), a list of entries and contributors, bibliographic references at the end of each entry, and the index is included within a separate volume.

The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Major Authors.

This popular anthology provides some of the more predominant pieces of medieval literature.

"1,000 historical events in summary form." The Ancient and Medieval Series is Part 1, volumes 1 through 3. Contains bibliographies, and an index in volume 3.

Historiography in the Middle Ages.
D116.H575 2003 Porter.

This work focuses on early to later medieval historiography. It includes footnotes, a complete bibliography, an author index, and terminology index.

Delogu, P. An Introduction to Medieval History.
D116.D4613 2002 Porter.

This work provides information on historical sources, methods and theories pertaining to medieval times. Also included is a comprehensive bibliography and name index.

Inventing the Middle Ages.
D116.C35 1991 Porter.

This source discusses "the lives, works and ideas of the great Medievalists of the Twentieth Century." Included in this book is a table of contents, notes, bibliography of sources used, and a general index.

Larousse Encyclopedia of Ancient and Medieval History, [1963].
Ref D59.L373 Porter.

Illustrated overview, covering ancient times to the 15th century.

Late Antiquity: A Guide to the Postclassical World.
DE5.L29 1999 Porter.

Covers information relating to Medieval society, philosophy, and religion. Contains illustrations, maps, a list of abbreviations, contributors, and illustration credits.

The Origins of the Middle Ages.
D116.L9 1972 Porter.

Provides a historiography focusing on the birth of the Middle Ages. It includes studies from Gibbon to Pirenne. Additional features include a chronological table, complete bibliography, and general index.

Portraits of Medieval and Renaissance Living.
CB351.P67 1996 Porter.

A collection of essays that respectively focus on the concepts of family, power, and patronage in Europe during the Middle Ages (and Renaissance). It also provides a comprehensive and detailed table of contents, footnotes, bibliography, list of contributors, and general index.

Atlases and Geography

Atlas of the Crusades.

This source provides historical geographical information from the commencement to the end of the Crusades. Includes chronology tables, colour maps and photos, a complete bibliography, glossary, and index.

Atlas of Medieval Europe.
G1791.M2 1997 St. Jerome's.

This atlas covers geographic information from the Early (c.1100) to the Central (c.1100 - c.1300) to the Late (c.1300 - c.1500) Middle Ages. Also provided are maps, a list of contributes, a complete bibliography, and a subject index.

Biographies

The Lives of Saints.
Ref BX4654.B8 1956 Porter (4 volumes).

Biographical information about each saint is organized by month, then date. Each entry varies in length and content. Most entries include cross-references and notes. Also provided is a detailed table of contents and a name index.

Medieval Religious Women.
BX4210.M345 1984 St. Jerome's (volume 3, books 1 and 2).

Also known as Hidden Springs: Cistercian Monastic Women. This source provides a historical background on Medieval Cistercian nuns. Some biographical accounts are included and provide information on women from St. Franca of Italy to Gertrude of Helfta. Bibliographies and notes are included at the end of each entry.

Medieval Christian Literary Imagery.

A bibliographic source that provides annotated leads to written publications and artwork that is related to Medieval Christian literary imagery. Also provides respective subject, modern author, and manuscript index.

Medieval Studies: A Bibliographic Guide.
Ref CB351.CC76x 1983 Porter.

Provides bibliographic information with brief annotations of the sources. Source topics range from Theses to Political Thought to Serials. Also included is an index of authors and editors, as well as a topic index.

Year's Work in Modern Language Studies.
Abs PB1.Y45 Porter.

Evaluates critical editions and secondary works. Covers Latin in section I.

Directories

International Directory of Medievalists.
D116.5.R46 1990 Porter.

This directory, although somewhat outdated, was produced by the Federation Internationale Des Institutes D'Etudes Medievales. It provides contact information by name and postal address for medievalists world-wide. Also included are a country index and a specialist index.

Medieval Women.

This Web directory provides "links to medieval sources relating to women" and was complied at Georgetown University. It "includes lives and works of medieval women, women rulers and creators, general resources, and bibliographies."

Monastic Matrix (A Scholarly Resource for the Study for Women's Religions Communities from 400-1600 C.E.).

This site "collects and makes available all existing data about all professional Christian women in Europe" during the Middle ages. It provides links to primary and secondary information sources (articles, bibliographies, images, etc.).

Historical Abstracts has long been recognized as the leading bibliography for historical study in the world. Currently over 2,000 journals published throughout the world are covered in the database, making this a historical periodical database unmatched in breadth. Provides coverage from 1450 to the present.

Humanities Full Text.
